‘It’s unbelievable to believe we were only open for one day since 2019!’

Re-opening of the Quality Hotel in Youghal

There will be some familiar faces, but many new team members welcoming guests to the Quality Hotel Youghal this season. The hotel has opened its doors after a very long absence.

There was a real buzz and great anticipation in the air when staff got together on Wednesday for a tasting menu prepared by new Head Chef, Valdemar Guerreiro, and his Sous Chef, Tiago Figueiredo, both from the Algarve and who bring new flavours and signature dishes to Redbarn.

“We opened and closed on one day in 2020. That was the 13th of March.” Noted proprietor, Allen McEnery. “It’s two and a half years since we closed for the winter after the Halloween break in 2019. I’d say our hotel may probably have been closed the longest due to Covid-19.” Allen went on to note. “We were fortunate to have our self-catering accommodation available for the past two summer seasons and that helped us to stay afloat. People felt safer having their own front door, rather than staying in a hotel – and the wide-open spaces of Redbarn Beach were ideal for a protected family break. However, folk missed the fun, the foodservice, and the social interaction of the hotel amenities. We are just so happy to be up and running again!”

There have been some exciting new developments since the hotel was last open. The Boardwalk to Youghal has been of considerable benefit to both guests and locals alike and a Hot Spot wood fired sauna now operates on the lower terrace for those who need to warm up after a dip in the cold sea! The Redbarn food emporium on the sun terrace will be back up and running with new additions, such as the Sea Breeze Patio Bar, serving fresh draught beers and other refreshments. A new and well-know Imokilly ‘food-to-go’ truck will also serve tasty bites outside the hotel, and your favourites, Pizza Tosca and La Creperie pop-up will continue to serve delish pizzas, crepes and waffles on the Patio for that special holiday treat!

The enormous impact on the hospitality industry due to Covid-19 has been very difficult. However, The Quality Hotel took the opportunity to complete additional renovations in two more apartment blocks, as well as in the lobby. Sadly, along with all tourism businesses, it now faces further struggles due to soaring prices caused by the war in Ukraine. “We must stand in solidarity with the Ukrainian people in this, their darkest hours. This is the most important thing we can do”

Staff getting ready to welcome guests back after 2 and a half years

Welcoming our new Head Chef, Valdemar Guerreiro

After two and a half years of closure, the Quality Hotel Youghal will re-open on the 16th of March.  These are exciting times of new beginnings, with many refurbishments and new colleagues joining the team. General Manager, Allen McEnery, is particularly delighted to welcome and introduce their new Head Chef, Valdemar Guerreiro.

“Chef Valdemar joins the team having spent many years working as a chef between the USA, Mexico, Portugal, Australia, Alaska, Argentina, Finland, the UK, and Central America,” noted Allen. “He brings a lifetime of over 20 years worldwide experience, working both on land, in excellent hotels and interesting restaurants, and at sea on luxury cruise liners.”

ValdamarDuring his career, the Portuguese-born chef has visited several exotic locations, such as Thailand, India, and Japan to improve his skill set and learn new gastronomic tricks of the trade. Chef Valdemar commented. “I feel like an eternal apprentice in the kitchen and continue to acquire new knowledge with every job. I enjoy learning – as well as sharing my knowledge with members of my team.” Valdemar went on to note, “I am passionate about my job and discovering new dishes. In Japan, I learned the craft of sushi-making and even dabbled in preparing the highly toxic pufferfish. Whilst in Asia, I got to grips with the often-complex techniques involved in preparing and blending spices. My international experiences have bought me both personal and professional enrichment of enormous value.”  Chef Valdemar has a vast knowledge of bakery and pastry. During his career, he also taught these skills at the Escola Hoteleira de Faro, enriching and sharing his experiences with the students.

“We hope chef Valdemar will enjoy our culture and working in Ireland and we look forward to sampling his cuisine.” Noted Allen, “Quality food and fresh flavours will be on the menu for our guests this year. I am sure there will be a fusion of international flavours and family favourites, all prepared with the very best locally sourced produce.”

Looking forward to welcoming you back!

We are delighted to let you know that here at Quality Hotel Youghal, we will be opening ALL our self-catering accommodation from 2nd June. This includes our Holiday Homes and two-bedroom Apartment Suites. The Hotel, Restaurant, and Bar will remain closed for 2021.

Part of any great holiday includes being able to enjoy good food and we have this covered! Our Head Chef, Kieran, has set up ‘Happy Grillmore’s’ pop-up kitchen just outside the hotel. He serves a scrumptious choice of all your favourites, such as buttermilk chicken burgers, sizzling steaks, beer-batter fish and chips, and much more besides. If it’s a sweet tooth and coffee you crave, Happy Bakemore’s is serving delicious desserts, pastries, and cakes on the sun terrace daily from 10 am.   Opening shortly is Nuno’s Crêperie, another pop-up delight for the terrace. Additionally, our authentic Napoli Pizza oven will be fully operational for take-aways for June, July, and August.

Here, at the Quality Hotel Youghal, our priority is the health and safety of our guests. Covid-19 is still with us and not everyone will be fully vaccinated by the summer. Our decision not to open the hotel, restaurant, and bar this year is based on the positive feedback from our 2020 visitors. They noted that they were more at ease knowing the facilities were not open and their children would be safer in the controlled environment of self-catering accommodation.

Club V Leisure Centre will open for members only from 2nd June. (Please book in advance) The Leisure Centre will not be available for our self-catering guests initially (subject to review). This is because numbers would be too high for the required self-distancing safety measures.

We wish you good health and well-being and look forward to welcoming you back to Redbarn  this summer.

From Allen McEnery, General Manager, and all the team at the Quality Hotel Youghal.
