Summer Plans for the Quality Hotel, Youghal

News Update re Covid-19

As we are all aware, government measures are currently in place to curb the spread of Covid-19 which means that hotels will not be allowed to reopen until the 20th of July. Here, at the Quality Hotel Youghal, we have been seriously considering the options for the health and safety of our guests post July 20th. We have now taken a tough decision and decided not to open our Hotel, Self-Catering Apartments, Restaurant or Bar for the 2020 Summer Season. Club V Leisure Centre will re-open for members as soon as Government guidelines permit.

Our decision was not taken lightly and was reached through careful deliberation and feedback from customers. We looked at the demographics of our guests, which are primarily Irish families and we had to take their safety first. We realised that it would be impossible to guarantee adherence from children to the necessary measures and social distancing requirements that would prevent the spread of Covid-19.

Nevertheless, our Holiday Homes ARE available to rent from the 20th July. With just our Holiday Homes on offer, we feel that parents will have a much more relaxing holiday break. They will have the wide-open spaces and fresh sea air of Redbarn Beach to enjoy and great family time to look forward to – without having to continually monitor their children’s smallest action. It will be good old-fashioned family fun, like building sandcastles, going for walks on the beach, scampering through Glenbower Woods or even visiting Fota Wildlife Park (which is now open for registered bookings ) or other attractions that may be open, such as Leahy’s Open Farm. There are also a number of take-away options available locally to ensure that everyone gets a holiday!

Our Holiday Homes will be deep cleaned and sanitised before arrival and best practice will be observed in relation to all contact with members of the team. Our primary focus is the health and well-being of your family and our staff. Your safety is paramount to us and we will take every action possible to ensure your safety. We ask you to look out for each other and stay safe.

Special Notice – Our Holiday Homes are AVAILABLE NOW for employees of businesses and industries who need to stay in the area.

For any queries, please email info@qualityhotelyoughal.com or tel. 024 93050.  During these temporary measures, our emails and phone lines will be monitored from Monday – Friday, 10.00am – 2.00pm.

Thank you for your ongoing support and patience during these extraordinary times. We wish you good health and well-being and look forward to welcoming you to Redbarn in the future when this has passed.

Finally, to the workers on the frontline, we cannot thank you enough for your dedication.

From Allen McEnery, General Manager, and all the team at the Quality Hotel Youghal.

Hotel – We have instituted a two-phase cleaning process, using the high quality Glana product, Zuko Sanitizer. The first is to removed debris from all tables in the bar and dining room as well as dressers and other surfaces in the bedrooms and bathrooms. This is followed by a deep clean sanitizing of all surfaces, paying particular attention to highchairs. There are now bottles of disinfectant and blue towel rolls throughout the public areas. These will be used to wipe down door handles, counters and tables on a regular basis. Our menus are only used once, then binned. We also have instigated a table spacing procedure for social distancing both in the bar and the restaurant.  Additional hand sanitizers and disposable gloves are available for both staff and guests.

Our Food – Executive Chef, Kieran O’Shaughnessy is totally committed to serving only the freshest foods to our guests. Everything is prepared in-house and nothing in bought in pre-cooked. The history of the region is truly fascinating and there are several amazing historic tours, sites and museums to visit. Moving a little west, a visit to Cobh is highly advised. Again, a unique maritime heritage can be found in this colourful town.  Cobh, formerly Queenstown, was the chief port of immigration from Ireland to the new world and the last port of call for the Titanic on her maiden voyage. This history of the town is recounted at the Queenstown Story at the Cobh Heritage Centre.  The Titanic Trail is another excellent option that brings visitors on a tour of the town, recounting the history of Cobh as well as the story of this ill-fated ship. For those who would like to like to experience what it would have been like to be a passenger on the Titanic, visit the Titanic Experience!

The newest visitor attraction in the region – and one that has received world renown already,  is Spike Island. Spike Island has been home to a 6th Century monastery, a 24 acre fortress, and a 21st Century prison with an amazing history in-between.  Ireland’s Alcatraz would only describe a small part of it! A visit to Spike involves a boat trip from Kennedy Pier in Cobh and is highly recommended.  Booking is advised. While you are still in Cobh, you might like to attempt a prison break yourself- which you can do by visiting Escape Cobh  One final escape may be on the cards for parents who would like a brief respite from the kids! Blue Flag flying over Redbarn Beach for 2019

Redbarn Beach has been awarded the Blue Flag again this year, this is a fantastic start to the 2019 tourism season.

Redbarn Beach is unique in East Cork as the only beach with this accolade. The Blue Flag is one of the world’s most familiar eco-labels. At beaches, the bathing water must comply with the excellent standard in accordance with the 2006 EU Bathing Water Directive.

Owner of the Quality Hotel at Redbarn, Allen McEnery noted, “Cork County Council have done tremendous work over the past few years in maintaining consistent & excellent bathing water quality. Their program of regularly clearing the beach of seaweed has been instrumental in achieving these pristine conditions – even with the dreadful storms and bad weather over the past year.  We would like to thank everyone who has helped to contribute to this success.”

Worldwide, the Blue Flag is awarded to approximately only 4000 beaches in 49 countries across Europe, South Africa, Tunisia, New Zealand, Brazil and the Caribbean. Beaches and marinas that achieve this honour must comply with a specific set of criteria relating to water quality, information provision, environmental education, safety and beach management. The Blue Flag programme is funded in Ireland by the Department of the Environment, Community & Local Government.

Allen finished by saying, “Youghal is renowned for its seaside location and a favourite holiday venue for families because of its great beaches. The pending Ironman next month has had a huge impact on the area already with athletes travelling in advance to trial course. The programme of road upgrades has been very welcome, and I do hope the event is a roaring success. “
