The Kanturk Hillwalkers are an enthusiastic group, who have to to many places mountainous places this year this year. The line-up includes Clara and Mushera near Millstreet, Mount Hillary in Banteer , the Paps near Rathmore , Mangerton / Purple / Torc in Killarney , Carrantoohill in Beaufort , Galtymore near Mitchelstown or Kilbeheny & the Glen Of Aherlow and Mount Brandon near Dingle , Hungry Hill near Adrigole.
The must all be VERY fit!
Once a year they gather together all the known local hill walkers and climbers and organise a Charity Climb in aid of a worthy cause. In 2014, fifty seven people climbed Carrantoohill in aid of Pieta House and a local cause for the Twomey Family Memorial. This year they climbed for the Kanturk Hospital & Marymount Hospice , with a total of fifty nine climbers over 2 Sundays.
The group buy maps and always use Hike Trackers Apps on their phones to track and store the routes to view on Computers and follow again the next time. They are always looking for new places to visit. Prior to taking people up any mountains, the group make sure they are fit enough beforehand, so usually graduate them up the Steps of the Ladder or other mountains.
Going forward, the Kanturk Hillwalkers hope to become a fully fledged group – and to discover new places to visit.
