From championship venues to ‘hidden gems’, you’ll be spoilt for choice at the variety of golf courses within a short drive of the Quality Hotel, Youghal
Starting in our own backyard is the wonderfully scenic Youghal Golf Club. It’s elevated setting affords spectacular views over the bay and that Wild Atlantic.
Travelling east brings you to West Waterford and then Dungarvan Golf Clubs. West Waterford is ranked as one of the top 10 ‘Hidden Gems in Ireland’. It was designed by Eddie Hackett, the architect responsible for so many of Ireland’s great tracts, including Waterville and Connemara. Just down the road is Dungarvan Golf Club, which is set against the background of the spectacular Comeragh Mountains and nestles next to the harbour. The fine clubhouse is a renovated Coastguard Station. It has been rated by Golf Digest as one of the “Top 100 Courses in Ireland”. Need we say more?
Head west, and your first port of call is the Castlemartyr Golf Club. It is designed by Ron Kirby, who was responsible for many of the spectacular holes at the famed Old Head of Kinsale. At Castlemartyr, Ron created a unique layout…an inland links! It presents an intoxicating array of holes, and no wonder…it is only 5 miles from the Jameson Distillery!
East Cork and Wate Rock Golf Clubs are close to Midleton, presenting some unique challenges. Bring a good supply of balls to Water Rock for “Swan Lake”, a challenging par 3…may also be your ‘swansong’!
We’ve saved the best for last, Fota Island Golf Club. Opened in 1992, it has played host to the Irish Club Professional’s Championship, two Irish Senior’s Open, three Irish Amateur Opens, and three Irish Open Championships. It now has 27 holes with the Deerpark Course being the championship venue. The complex enjoys a state of the art Golf Academy with a driving range, instruction bays, and 3 practice greens. The clubhouse is a tasteful conversion of old stone farm buildings. New for this year is an outdoor patio area where you can sip your post-round drinks while overlooking challenging 18th green.
