Great start to the Summer Season.

News that Redbarn Beach has been awarded the Blue Flag for excellent water quality again this year comes as fantastic start to the 2017 tourism season.

“This is brilliant news for the local community in Youghal, our customers and indeed our team at the Quality Hotel.” said Allan McEnery, General Manager/Joint Owner of the resort. “While we have a wonderful indoor swimming complex, gym and spa, there is nothing more important to us than the beach and the seashore outside our door. This winter we undertook a large renovation programme at the hotel, so our guests can now enjoy some of the cleanest bathing water in Ireland – while enjoying our refurbished complex.”

Redbarn is one of just 81 beaches in Ireland to have received this accolade. The Blue Flag is one of the world’s most recognised eco-labels. At beaches, the bathing water must comply with the excellent standard in accordance with the 2006 EU Bathing Water Directive.

“We would like to thank everyone who has helped to contribute to this achievement. I would especially like to mention Cork County Council who have instituted a programme of regularly clearing the beach of seaweed area – essential for pristine bathing conditions. The improved infrastructure for waste water in Youghal has also been a very beneficial for bating water quality in the entire area. At the same time, some aspects of the Blue Flag accreditation are beyond our control. Severe winter storms can have a negative effect due to the runoff from farmlands. The calm weather over the past 12 months must have been a contributing factor in this most welcome news.”

Worldwide, the Blue Flag is awarded to approximately only 4000 beaches in 49 countries across Europe, South Africa, Tunisia, New Zealand, Brazil and the Caribbean. Beaches and marinas that achieve this honour must comply with a specific set of criteria relating to water quality, information provision, environmental education, safety and beach management. The Blue Flag programme is funded in Ireland by the Department of the Environment, Community & Local Government.

Allen finished by saying, “The Quality Hotel, Youghal is renowned for its seaside location and a favourite holiday venue for families. Guest accommodation is literally just a stone’s throw from the beach. So, if you are looking for some good old fashioned fun on the beach, and an amazing Blue Flag Beach too, Quality Hotel & Leisure Centre, Youghal, is the perfect place for you!”
