The history of the region is truly fascinating and there are several amazing historic tours, sites and museums to visit. Starting in Youghal, a visit to the recently restored Clock Gate is a must, where storytellers will help you see Youghal in a new light.  A Walking Tour of this historic walled port is  also available with the Town Crier, Clifford Winser, who will fill you in on fascinating historic facts. Traditional Irish music, song, dance & storytelling entertainment is also available in Youghal, with Comhaltas Seisiún Brú na Sí. For less traditional entertainment, the Regal Cinema is well worth a visit. Originally opened in the summer of 1936, the Regal has recently been extensively transformed. Retaining  much of its heritage & history, the cinema now has added modern comforts including a wine bar and cafe. Finally, a MUST for some great family entertainment in Youghal is a visit to Perks Family Entertainment Centre. At 70,000 square feet, Perks is one of the largest indoor funfair entertainment centres in Ireland. Perfect for a rainy day, the centre includes a large selection of rides, games, attractions and the amazing Showboat Casino.

Moving a little west, a visit to Cobh is highly advised. Again, a unique maritime heritage can be found in this colourful town.  Cobh, formerly Queenstown, was the chief port of immigration from Ireland to the new world and the last port of call for the Titanic on her maiden voyage. This history of the town is recounted at the Queenstown Story at the Cobh Heritage Centre.  The Titanic Trail is another excellent option that brings visitors on a tour of the town, recounting the history of Cobh as well as the story of this ill-fated ship. For those who would like to like to experience what it would have been like to be a passenger on the Titanic, visit the Titanic Experience!

The newest visitor attraction in the region – and one that has received world renown already,  is Spike Island. Spike Island has been home to a 6th Century monastery, a 24 acre fortress, and a 21st Century prison with an amazing history in-between.  Ireland’s Alcatraz would only describe a small part of it! A visit to Spike involves a boat trip from Kennedy Pier in Cobh and is highly recommended.  Booking is advised. While you are still in Cobh, you might like to attempt a prison break yourself- which you can do by visiting Escape Cobh  One final escape may be on the cards for parents who would like a brief respite from the kids! Jungle World in Midleton also offer our guests a special discount, so set them loose at Jungleworld to ensure a good night sleep with tired kiddies!
